WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and other Facebook apps have started showing the company’s new ‘Meta’ branding on both Android and iOS devices. The change comes almost a week after Facebook changed its company name to ‘Meta’.
The motive behind Facebook’s name change is that the company is now moving beyond traditional social media to an immersive experience called ‘Metaverse’. Along with Facebook, Microsoft and other tech companies are also working towards their respective metaverses. Facebook is probably looking to make a name for itself in the race for the metaverse of this rebranding. Now the same re-branding has started appearing on Facebook or Meta’s social media and messaging apps as well.
Meta branding released on social apps
Last week, the Meta branding was seen in beta apps for WhatsApp running on Android and iOS devices. Now this branding is visible on the stable version of WhatsApp as well as other apps of the company, including apps for Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. At present, after this re-branding, no other changes have been seen in these apps.
Last week, WhatsApp head Will Cathcart announced new branding on the instant messaging app. He said that this update is about recognizing the fact that the parent company of WhatsApp is not limited to Facebook alone.
In 2019, Facebook started showing its original branding on the WhatsApp and Instagram apps. This move was done by people to expose their ownership of these two popular platforms by Facebook. Some experts in the industry also described the move as a way to improve Facebook’s image. However, now that Facebook’s name has become meta, it should come as no surprise that new branding is coming to these apps.
